Wanting to learn more about the treatment methods an orthodontist uses for their patients? Most people understand that orthodontists are dental professionals who have a focus on straightening their patients' teeth as well as correcting any existing malocclusions. What many people do not know is that orthodontists use a variety of methods in order to treat their patients. Two of the more common orthodontic problems treated include bad bites and crooked teeth.

Common treatments by orthodontists

The fact that many advances are being made for addressing dental issues means that dental patients have more choices than ever before when it comes to improving their oral health. The following is a list of some of the more popular treatment methods orthodontists used to treat their patients today.

Braces

The most popular treatment method orthodontists use is braces. While there are many different types of braces options available, they all essentially work the same way. Braces are used to put pressure on the teeth in order to slowly move them back into their correct position. Three of the more common types of braces are traditional metal braces, ceramic braces and clear braces.

Jaw repositioning appliances

When the upper or lower jaw is not in its correct position, an orthodontist will often use a jaw repositioning appliance in order to reposition them back into their proper place. These repositioning appliances are also known as splints and are commonly used when malocclusion is present.

Space maintainers

Space maintainers are used for filling in the empty spaces left by missing baby teeth. This is necessary so that the other teeth do not begin to move into the empty space, as the permanent tooth will eventually grow in and needs this space.

Expanders

Expanders are used for dental patients who have an overcrowded mouth. The expanders are positioned on the curve of the upper jaw area and/or the lower jaw area, which is necessary as this makes additional room so that the teeth can be aligned properly. The proper alignment of teeth and jaw is essential to having a good bite.

Headgear

Headgear is a treatment method that orthodontists use in order to slow down the growth of a dental patient's jaw. When wearing a headgear is necessary to help the patient's jaw, the patient must wear it for a certain number of hours every day in order to expect good results.
