Everyone wants that perfect smile. A beautiful white smile can be a real confidence booster. While one might think that the solution is whitening treatments, it is important to know that those whitening treatments aren’t permanent and won’t keep teeth white forever. If teeth are exposed to drinks or foods that cause stains, you could see that white smile fade a few weeks after whitening treatment. It’s good to be proactive and know what to do in order to keep that beautiful white smile looking its best.

1. Watch what is consumed

Watch what you consume. Avoid consuming products that stain your teeth, such as red wine, tea, coffee, dark juices, and soda. If you do consume beverages that might cause staining, use a straw so the beverage will bypass your front teeth and reduce the staining risk. Smoking cigarettes or cigars will also lead to yellowing of your teeth. Gravies and other dark foods can also cause staining.

2. Brush those teeth

Brush your teeth or at least rinse your mouth immediately after consuming any foods or beverages that are known to cause stains. Eating an apple right after consuming foods or drinks that might stain is also beneficial. Apples offer convenient and healthy teeth cleaning. The two most crucial times to brush your teeth are when you first get out of bed in the morning then at night before you go to bed.

3. Proper oral hygiene

Always practice good oral hygiene. Teeth should be brushed at least twice a day. Floss at least once a day to get rid of plaque, and rinse with an antiseptic mouthwash at least once daily to kill plaque-causing bacteria. A whitening toothpaste should be used – but only once or twice weekly – to get rid of surface stains and to prevent yellowing of the teeth. A regular toothpaste is adequate to use the rest of the time.

4. Replace toothbrushes regularly

Change toothbrushes. You should change the head of an electric toothbrush at least every two to three months. If you don’t, there will possibly be bacteria transferred into your mouth. If given an antibiotic to cure an illness, changing toothbrushes or toothbrush heads is the best thing to do in order to avoid getting sick again. Upon finishing the medication, be sure to change out.

5. Freshen your breath

Maintain fresh breath. If you lick the palm of your hand and smell something, it is time to freshen that breath. Pop a sugar-free breath mint. When shopping for mouthwash, choose a brand that doesn’t contain alcohol. Over-the-counter mouthwashes are high in alcohol content, which can dry out the mouth increasing susceptibility to bacteria.

Keeping that white smile looking its best

By being proactive, it’s possible to keep that white smile looking its best. Everyone desires a smile that they can be proud of and that they want to show off as often as possible. Have regular checkups with the dentist, so that any oral health issues are addressed right away, and so that your smile stays beautiful.
